Disability Services: Description of Services

Services for students with disabilities are coordinated through the Special Needs Counselor located in the Counseling Center at each campus. Services are provided based on the individual needs of the student. Determination of appropriate accommodations is based on medical assessment and documentation. In addition, other resources including the student's physician, psychologist, instructor and/or the Dean of Instruction may be consulted regarding the appropriateness of accommodations. In order for services to be provided, the student must selfidentify to the Special Needs Counselor on either campus. The student must provide appropriate documentation that indicates the accommodations needed or that provides information adequate to determine appropriate accommodations.

Services offered by Germanna Community College include, but are not limited to:

• Registration assistance
• Orientation to campus
• Assistance with purchasing books.
• Modification of the entrance test
• In-class testing modifications including:
  • -extended time, testing in a separate/distration reduced location, readers and scribes
• Readers
• Assistance ordering textbooks from Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic (RFB&D)
• Sign Language Interpreters/Transliterators
• Copying service
• Use of tape recorder in the classroo
• Movement of classes to more accessible locatio
• Liaison with faculty through letters and conferences
• Accessible parking
• Information and referral to campus and community agencie
• Assistive technology (CCTV, FM System, etc.)

Students needing interpreter services should make a request at least three weeks prior to the start of classes in order for the College to attempt to secure a qualified interpreter
