Compass Placement Test Information

Germanna Placement Test Preparation Guide

Assessment of skill level is mandatory for all new students.Test results are used to determine which classes you are eligible to take: you cannot fail these tests. Placement test scores are valid for three (3) years. Each test is untimed; however, all exams will be completed 15 minutes before closing. If you need additional time, follow-up testing time is available. Please note we no longer offer foreign language placement test, students who wish to take a higher level will need to take a CLEP test. Information on CLEP test is available at www.collegeboard.com.

On rare occasions, power outages, server outages, or weather problems can and do close us without warning when we least expect it. We recommend that you plan to take you tests well in advance before you need them. Please allow yourself sufficient time for testing and enough time for us to serve you well.

The approximate time the tests can take:

Complete Placement Test (English and Math) 3 hours

Math or English placement test 2 hours

ESL Complete Placement Test (Reading and Grammar) 3 hours

ESL Reading or Grammar 2 hours

Computer Competency Test 3 hours

The Fredericksburg Area Campus Placement Test Center can set up remote COMPASS placement tests for students. This service allows students who are not currently located in the Germanna Community College region to complete their testing at a participating remote site. Please contact Fredericksburg Area Campus Counseling Office at 540-891-3022 or smonroe@germanna.edu for an appointment.

Computer Competency Tests are available at Locust Grove Campus and Fredericksburg Area Campus during regular scheduled placement testing times. Please allow at least three (3) weeks for results. To arrange for an appointment at the Locust Grove Campus call the LGC Counseling Center Office at 540-423-9123 and for Fredericksburg Area Campus call 540-834-1019 or 540-891-3022.

To make an appointment we need first and last name, phone number where we can contact you [in case of technical problems] and your Germanna student ID #.

The times listed are start times; not a range of times where you can choose any time within the start time. We have scheduled appointments due to staffing and number of computers available for test.

You MUST have photo identification to take the test. Photo Identification Requirements

You MUST have your Germanna student ID # to take the test. You will receive a student ID# when your application has been submitted. Email / ID# Help

Children are not allowed in the testing room.

All personal belongings such books, drinks, food, back packs, and other personal items will be keep at a designated area in the room. You may leave them locked in your vehicle.

No outside electronic devices such as personal calculators, translators, ipods, or cell phones are allowed in the Testing Center, if you bring them with you they will be keep in a designated area in the room. You may leave them locked in your vehicle.
