Blackboard Best Practices

1. Archive each course you teach on a weekly basis.
2. Download (backup) your gradebook weekly and after each test.
3. Take time to plan your course and disable any feature that you will not be using.
4. Create a Staff Profile so your students can get a sense of who you are.
5. Add content before you want the students to see it, and set it as unavailable until it is needed. This way you will avoid the last minute rush and any unforseen technical issues can be easily overcome.
6. Include in your course expectations what file format you would like students to submit their assignments as. For example, you may require everyone to use Microsoft Word.
7. Specify a naming convention for the files that your students submit. For example assign1_JohnDoe.doc
8. Create an Instructor Forum (where students ask you questions) in the Discussion Board area and check this forum at least once every 24 hours.
9. Use the Assignment feature rather then the Digital Drop Box as a means for students submitting their work.
10. Organize your course into Modules (weeks, chapters, etc.). This will help alleviate confusion from the student's perspective.
