This page is designed to help prospective students learn more about the dental hygiene program. Here you will find important notices regarding the program as well as important links.

Steps For Applying To The Dental Hygiene Program

1. Apply to Germanna Community College for general admission

2. Take the English and Math Placement Tests. Appointments for these tests are scheduled through Student Services.

3. Explore the dental hygiene website and watch the Program Information Presentation.

4. Set up an appointment with the Local Coordinator or Assistant Coordinator to make sure you are on the right track.

5. Register for all non DNH courses. Chances of being accepted are increased if you have taken most or all of the general education courses required for the degree. These courses are Health Science I and II, College Composition I, Lifetime Fitness and Wellness, Indtroduction to Psycology I, Topics in Health Care, Humanities Elective, Physical Education Elective, and Intercultural Communication.

6. Applications to the dental hygiene program will be online in December. It is a self-directed application process. Please follow the instructions listed in the application pack. Dental hygiene program applications will no longer be mailed out. Applications to the dental hygiene program for will be posted on this website in late November or early December. Please check it periodically. The window for submitting dental hygiene applications will be January 15, 2008 through February 15, 2008. Postmarked by the February 15th will not be accepted.

ATTENTION: Admission procedures for NVCC and GCC are in the process of becoming consistent. In order to achieve this consistency, changes to the admission process has changed for the incoming class (Fall 2008). More changes will be forthcoming for the Fall 2009 application process. Applicants are strongly encouraged to check this website frequently for those updates.
As of August 31, 2007 Applicants must:
  • Complete Natural Science I and II must be completed with a "B" or better prior to beginning any of the dental hygiene courses.
  • Complete English Composition (ENG 111) must be completed with a "C" or better prior to enrolling in any of the dental hygiene courses. Students who do not meet this requirement will not be allowed to enter the program.
  • Listen to an online information session. This link will be available soon.
  • Complete a VCCS Common Application.
  • Submit 1 letter of recommendation.
  • Qualify for MTH 04 - Algebra
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Pass a Computer Competency Exam or ITE 115.
  • Submit answers to essay questions.
  • Submit 2 copies of official transcripts for all high schools and institutions of higher education attended.
Applications will have weighted criteria. Applicants will:
  • Receive 1 point for having completed the general education requirements toward the degree.
  • Receive 1 point for prior paid work experience. A copy of your most recent W-2 will be submitted in your application pack.
  • Receive 1 point for any other completed degree from an institution of higher education.
  • Have thier GPA calculated based on general education requirements for the dental hygiene degree.
  • Receive 5 points for students who are legally domiciled in the counties of Orange, Madison, Culpeper, Spotsylvania, Stafford, King George, Caroline, and the City of Fredericksburg.

Applications will only be accepted when submitted as completed packs between January 1st and January 31st of each year. For the 2008 application cycle, applications will be accepted until February 15, 2008 due to website difficulties experienced during the holiday break.
