PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES

Germanna Community College 's Nursing Programs are dedicated to preparing individuals to be competent and caring healthcare providers who will help to meet the health care needs of the college's service region and who will be motivated to seek life long learning opportunities. The nursing programs are designed to prepare beginning practitioners with the knowledge and skills to care for patients of all age groups and to qualify as contributing members of the healthcare team. The curriculum is designed to promote the student's acquisition of knowledge and the development of the ability to give competent nursing care to patients in relatively stable situations. Upon completion of the nursing program, graduates are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN or NCLEX-RN).

NUR 100 introduces the college level pre-nursing student to topics and contents that will help him/her be more successful in the nursing program, such as test taking, study tips, time management, how to learn, writing papers, computer skills, learning resources, and faculty variability. In addition, NUR 100 will provide an introduction to challenging nursing topics that will allow the college level pre-nursing student to being to understand nursing content that will be discussed in more depth upon entering a nursing program, such as fluid and electrolytes, death and dying, alternative therapies, drug dosage, documentation, communication, nursing process, critical thinking, diagnostic evaluations, ageism and other topics.

Furthermore, nursing students, such as single parents, displaced homemakers, individuals with limited English proficiency, or individuals with other barriers to educational achievement, are at-risk for attrition because of the varied demands placed on their time while in the nursing program. As a result, the nursing department has developed the pre-nursing concept, whereby college level pre-nursing students who are interested in entering the nursing program will be exposed to topics and concepts that will better prepare them for entrance and success in the nursing programs
