Types of Employment
Adjunct Faculty

Adjunct Faculty are employed to teach less than a normal faculty load or to teach less than a full session on a semester by semester or summer term basis. The adjunct faculty contract contains no guarantee of continued employment.

Classified or Full-Time (Position number usually begins with 000)

Full-Time Employees are hired to work 40 hours a week as a regular schedule. They serve a probationary period of one year and are eligible for all state benefits. In addition to all standard benefits required by law, Germanna offers its full-time employees a comprehensive benefits package.

Administrative Faculty (Position number begins with FA)

Administrative Faculty perform work related to the management of the educational and general activities of the college, department, or division. All administrative faculty are normally employed on a twelve-month basis beginning on July 1 and ending on June 30.

Teaching Faculty (Position number begins with F0)

Full-time teaching faculty are normally on nine-month appointments which include the fall and spring semesters of the academic year. All assistant division chairmen and program heads are appointed as teaching faculty. Such appointments are made at the discretion of the individual college.

Wage or Part-Time (Position number usually begins with WG)

The Virginia Personnel Act does not cover wage employees. Part-time employees are limited to working a maximum of 1,500 hours during a period of 365 consecutive days starting the first day an employee begins working (anniversary date). These employees do not have a probationary period and are not eligible to receive state benefits other than those required by law such as:

  • Social Security Benefits
  • Worker's Compensation
  • Unemployment Compensation

In addition, Germanna offers its part-time employees the following benefits:

  • Use of all college facilities
  • Access to Workforce classes
  • Tuition assistance after 12 months of employment. (Up to $500.00 per semester).

How to Apply

  • A Virginia State Employment Application is required when applying for any position. Resumes are encouraged; however, they are not substitute for the mandatory state application. Note: Any material submitted without a state application will not be considered.
  • The position number mst be indicated on the upper left corner of the state application.
  • It is important to read each announcement carefully. Detailed instructions are included in each announcement and should be followed closely.
  • A separate application is required for each position you wish to apply for and it must be received in the Office of Human Resources by 4:30 PM on the closing date. Postmark will not be honored.
  • If you email your application and you are called for an interview and selected, you will be asked to sign your application before an offer can be extended. Please note that we do not accept emailed or faxed applications for faculty ranked positions.
  • The application should be completed, typed or clearly printed in dark ink. It is important to provide complete detailed information about qualifications, education, as well as any relevant training.
  • The application must be received in the Office of Human Resources by 4:30p.m., on the closing date. Postmark will not be honored.

Please note that every application package is forwarded to a hiring committee for review. this process typically takes 2 to 4 weeks from the date the position closes. You will only be contacted if you are selected to receive an interview. All material submitted becomes property of Germanna Community College and will not be returned. The Human Resources Office handles the recruitment for every campus.
