VaCIE-VCCS International Exchange
Information Sheet for Applicants
You should have received three documents as email attachments:
- This Information Sheet for Applicants
- The cover sheet for the application
- The VaCIE-VCCS International Exchange Application 2006
Please fill out the cover sheet and application in full. Print one copy, sign it, and return it to your campus contact person by the due date, February 24, 2006. His/her postal address, email, and FAX are provided at the bottom of the application.
Also by the due date, send a digital copy to your campus contact as an email attachment. Note that your application must include a digital photograph of yourself.
Your application will be reviewed at your campus by the chief academic officer and s/he will determine whether your college will support you as a delegate to the exchange. On or around March 3, 2006, the supported applications will be forwarded to me. In late March, your application will be evaluated a second time by the VaCIE-VCCS International Exchange Steering Committee. Once you have been approved at these two levels, your application will be sent to my exchange partners in the UK and the Netherlands and the process of finding an appropriate match will begin. Usually this process lasts well into the summer with some matches not finalized until mid-August.
We have been exchanging with the further education colleges in England, Wales, and the two-year colleges in the Netherlands since the beginning of this exchange 11 years ago. In the past year, we enjoyed an expanded exchange which included Scotland’s further education (FE) colleges as well as Glasgow Caledonian University as participants. All colleges function in English, though in some portions of western Wales and Highland Scotland you will find people who speak Welsh or Scots Gaelic at home. Be certain to check below if you would like to be considered at the Dutch colleges as well as in the UK. (Nursing and administration of justice are not taught at FE colleges in the UK, but are at the two-year colleges in the Netherlands). Naturally, all their classes are conducted in Dutch, though all Dutch citizens study English. They tend to be quite good at foreign languages though you should not expect them to be as fluent as native speakers. Your college’s Contact Person as well as faculty members who have participated in the exchange in the past are knowledgeable sources of information about the exchange and will be happy to answer your general questions. Another resource, the website for the exchange, is now available online and offers much useful information. Please note that it is still under construction and may have some minor anomalies. Click http://www.vacie-vccsinternationalexchange.org. If you would like specific information about the participating European institutions or any other aspect of the exchange, please feel free to contact me directly at mwentworth@jtcc.edu.
Best of luck!!
