Career Studies Certificate

Purpose:
Certified pharmacy technicians are valuable assets to the licensed pharmacist. They are able to perform duties that do not require the skills and judgment of a licensed pharmacist. They may also be helpful in situations that require the expertise of a licensed pharmacist. This program will prepare the individuals of this program to support licensed pharmacists in providing health care and medications. Students will be able to obtain the knowledge needed to perform duties under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.

Objectives:

  • Be able to recognize pharmaceutical and medical terms, abbreviations, and symbols and use them appropriately
  • Prepare and distribute medications
  • Perform pharmacy calculations that may be required
  • Perform proper aseptic technique and packaging in the preparation of medications
  • Assist the pharmacist in monitoring of the work area for compliance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations and professional standards
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information
  • Communicate clearly orally and in writing
  • Use computers to perform pharmacy functions
  • Demonstrate appropriate conduct in all activities related to the delivery of pharmacy services
STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE FOR REGISTERING FOR THE PHARMACY TECHNICIAN PROGRAM
  1. Contact Mr. John Stroffolino to answer questions you may have about the course content or registering for classes. Mr. Stroffolino can be reached at (540) 423-9853 or by E-mail at: jstroffolino@germanna.edu.
  2. Turn in an Application to the Admissions and Records Office or Apply online: http://www.germanna.edu the Germanna Community College home page.
  3. Take an Algebra Placement test available through the Counseling office at either campus. Take the Reading and Writing placement test if you have not successfully completed a college English class. Call for an appointment.

  4. Complete a Nursing and Health Technology Program Application for the Pharmacy Technician Program. Submit application to Mr. Stroffolino
  5. Schedule interview with Mr. Stroffolino.
  6. Once you have been offered admission into the Pharmacy Technician Program
    1. Register for Classes
    2. Pay Tuition through Cashier's Office
    3. Purchase Textbooks from College Bookstore
