The Nursing & Allied Health Department/Practical Nursing


Purpose: This 12-month program is designed to prepare selected students to qualify as contributing members of the health team, rendering direct patient care as beginning practitioners of practical nursing in a variety of health service facilities. Upon successful completion of the curriculum, students will be eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination leading to licensure as a practical nurse (LPN).

Occupational Objectives: Through comprehensive educational experiences, students will emerge as motivated health care providers in their field and possess the potential for lifelong learning. Graduates of the program may, upon licensure, be eligible for employment in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, schools, physician's offices, and other community health settings.

**Note** Nursing Advising Forms are currently being revised. The forms here represent the most current revision. Updated requirements will become effective February 15, 2007 and will not effect the Febuary 1, 2007 application requirements of MTH 02, GPA of 2.3, pre-admission test scores of 50% or higher and LPN-RN applicants applying to the AD program May 15, 2007. LPN Application

LPN-RN Information:

Licensed Practical Nurses: LPNs who have met all Germanna Community College requirements for admission to the nursing program and are in the process of taking the general education requirements toward the AAS in nursing may articulate into second level nursing courses pending performance on NLN achievement Tests or according to contractual agreements. LPNs are responsible for testing costs.Articulation agreements are in place between Germanna Community College and the regional licensed practical nursing programs. LPNs from articulated programs are exempt from the NLN Achievement Tests for three years following graduation from the contracted programs. LPNs should see their nursing faculty advisors for further information.

LPN to RN Demonstration of Proficiency for Eligibility for Advanced Placement Policy

LPNs who have met all Germanna Community College requirements for admission to the nursing program and are in the process of taking the general education requirements toward the AAS in nursing may articulate into second level nursing courses pending performance on Achievement Tests/Mid-Curriculum Tests or according to contractual agreements. LPNs are responsible for testing costs, approximately $45. Articulation agreements are in place between Germanna Community College and specific licensed practical nursing programs. Awarding of 16 credits results from the articulation agreements in place between Germanna Community College and the specific Practical Nursing Program, and/or successful completion of the LPN to RN Transition course.

The Achievement Tests/Mid-Curriculum Tests cover content equivalent to the NUR course work in the first year of the nursing curriculum. The tests assess the LPN to RN applicant's proficiency on basic nursing concepts, prenatal care, stages of labor, postpartum care, and fetal and newborn nursing concepts. Applicants should request copies of NUR course syllabi and review the courses' content prior to testing. Testing is included in the LPN to RN Transition course NUR 115.

LPN to RN Transition Course Requirement Policy

Effective January 2003, all LPN to RN applicants will be required to take NUR 115, LPN to RN Transition Course and the course must be taken prior to entry into the second year of the AAS nursing curriculum, unless otherwise advised by the Program Director. LPN to RN applicants are expected to have completed ITE 115, NAS 161 & NAS 162 prior to enrolling in to NUR 115.

LPN to RN Application Deadline: May 15

LPN to RN applicant must be licensed and have completed NUR 115, NAS 161 & NAS 162 and ITE 115 by the May 15 application deadline to the LPN-RN advanced placement associate degree track.

Students completing the PN program in May who plan to apply to the LPN-RN program should complete non-nursing courses in the associate degree program, practice as an LPN and apply to the LPN to RN program in May of the following year.

Transfer/ReAdmit Information:

Transferring Nursing Students: A transfer nursing student is an individual who has successfully completed part of an associate degree nursing education program or its equivalent and meets GCC reequirements for admission to the nursing program. Placement of transferring students into the nursing curriculum will be determined by official transcript analysis and space availability.
