Computer Competency Requirements
(effective Summer 2002 - updated 8/04)
For graduation, students in programs of more than 45 semester hours must demonstrate proficiency in specific computer competencies. Proficiency can be demonstrated by passing a competency test or a competency course as described below. The course used to satisfy the computer competency requirement depends upon the catalog year used to determine your graduation requirements.
Computer Competency Exam: Satisfies the computer
competency requirement for students graduating from the 1999-2001 catalog or any subsequent catalog. A student may take the Computer Competency
Exam only 1 time. There is a study
guide available in the
IST 113:
Satisfies the computer competency requirement for students graduating
from the 1999-2001 catalog or the 2001-2003 catalog. IST 113 will not meet the computer
competency for students graduating from the 2003-2005 catalog,
which becomes effective in Summer 2003, or any subsequent catalog.
IST 114: Satisfies the computer competency requirement for students graduating from the 1999-2001 catalog or the 2001-2003 catalog. However, if students have not completed a computer competency course by the end of Summer 2002, it is recommended that they take ITE 115 (formerly IST 117)*. IST 114 will not meet the computer competency for students graduating from the 2003-2005 catalog, which becomes effective in Summer 2003, or any subsequent catalog.
ITE 115 (formerly IST 117): Satisfies the computer competency for students graduating from the 1999-2001 catalog or any subsequent catalog*.
ETR 166: Satisfies the computer competency for
students graduating from the 1999-2001 catalog or the
2001-2003 catalog. ETR 166 will not meet
the computer competency requirement for students graduating from the 2003-2005 catalog, which becomes effective in Summer 2003, or any
subsequent catalog.
Technology Courses from Other Institutions: Technology courses equivalent to any of the above courses will satisfy the computer competency requirement as described above. However, technology courses more than 5 years old will not transfer to GCC or satisfy the competency requirement.
*Note: Beginning Fall 2002, ITE 115 (formerly IST 117) is the intended computer competency course because the course content of IST 114 will be revised to be a higher-level technical course.
