Policy 20020: Extension Cord Use

1.0             Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to reduce the fire hazards and health risks associated with substandard wiring, specifically extension cords.

2.0       Policy

2.1.           “EXTENSION CORDS” are not to be used at Germanna Community College as “PERMANENT WIRING.”  Instead of using an extension cord, three options exist.  First, move the appliance/equipment closer to a building receptacle; second, have a new receptacle installed near the new equipment; third, use a power strip with a circuit breaker.

3.0             Definitions

3.1.           Extension Cord – Any detached/portable 110-volt or higher voltage wiring that is used to transfer power from an outlet or power source to a power-consuming device.  Typically an extension cord has one male plug on one end and one to three receptacles on the other end.

3.2.           Permanent Wiring – Wiring that is used for more than eight hours in a day and is left connect at all times.
