William Thomas Biography
William Evan Thomas of Culpeper was appointed to the Germanna Community College Board in 2012 as an at-large member representing the county of Culpeper.
He served in Vietnam as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army, has been a self-employed dairy farmer in Orange County, has worked for 27 years for the Virginia Cooperative Extension and has taught Agriscience and been a Future Farmers of America teacher in the Culpeper County Schools.
Mr. Thomas earned a bachelor’s degree in Dairy Science-Production in 1964 and a master’s degree in Adult Education in 1980, both at Virginia Tech.
He has served as District Director of the Virginia Chapter of the 4-H All Stars, Chair of the Leadership Council and Coordinator of Operation Christmas Child and teaches Sunday School at Culpeper Baptist Church.
“The breadth and scope of community colleges is truly amazing and grows each year,” Mr. Thomas says. “When communities within the service area have a need, the colleges are willing to assist if it fits the college's mission. As a veteran, I have been pleased to see how the system has mobilized to meet the growing numbers of veterans entering their programs. “
Mr. Thomas is a life member of the Virginia and Culpeper Retired Teachers Association, the National and Virginia Association of Extension 4-H Agents, the National Association of County Agricultural Agents and Epsilon Sigma Phi, an honorary extension professional group.
He is married to Susan B. Thomas. The couple has a son Evan, a daughter, Karen Thomas Sheehan and five grandchildren.
