Basic Rider Course (BRC) - FAQs

workforce and community

What is the Basic Rider Course (BRC)?

The motorcycle rider course, known as the Basic Rider Course (BRC), is a complete, hands-on course of instruction for motorcycle street riders ages 15 1/2 years old and up. The course assumes no prior knowledge of motorcycling. The only prerequisite for the BRC class is that a student be comfortable with balancing on two wheels - (i.e. the student can ride a bicycle prior to attempting this class).

What will I learn?

This 15-hour course begins with an overview of the course, a review of the types of motorcycles, and instruction in motorcycle controls and protective gear. The riding portion of the program covers these riding skills:

  • Straight-line riding
  • Turning, shifting and braking
  • Street riding strategies
  • Hazard avoidance
  • Advanced turning
  • Maximum braking
  • Handling special riding situations

Can I use my own equipment?

MotorcycleAll students will be supplied with a training motorcycle, a DOT compliant 3/4 helmet and classroom training materials. Students are encouraged to use their own DOT compliant 3/4 or full-faced helmet if they have one. All students must use the motorcycles provided.

What type of motorcycles are used in the BRC training program?

MotorcycleThe bikes used in the BRC program are generally 125cc or 250cc street style motorcycles. They weigh approximately 200-250 lbs and seat heights range from 24 to 27 inches (depending on the model selected). Rider coaches will match riders to the size bike that best fits their needs.

What supplies are provided in class?

  • Classroom materials
  • Training motorcycle (sorry, only our motorcycles can be used for training)
  • Helmet (If you wish, you may bring your own DOT compliant 3⁄4 or full-face helmet.)”

What do I need to bring?

You must wear protective gear. This includes the following:

  • Eye protection
  • Sturdy over the ankle boots (not cloth or canvas)
  • Long sleeve shirt or jacket
  • Long denim pants or equally durable material
  • Full finger gloves
  • Snacks for each day

For all classes, but especially in the summer classes, be sure to drink plenty of water the entire week prior to class so that you will be sufficiently hydrated.

If I take this class, do I have to take the DMV licensing exam?

Successful completion of this course exempts the student from the riding portion and written test of Virginia's DMV and may entitle the student to a reduced rate on motorcycle insurance. We do our own testing and each student will need to score at least 80% on the riding & written evaluations to become a licensed rider.

Who is eligible for the Basic Rider Course?

Students must be at least 15 1/2 years of age and have successfully completed the classroom portion of a basic drive education course. Other enrollment requirements include:

  • Parental permission (if under age 18)
  • Ability to balance on two wheels as in riding a bicycle
  • Completion of a risk/liability waiver (provided at the first session)

How long are the classes, and when are the classes offered?

All motorcycle classes are held at the Locust Grove Campus. Classes are offered every weekend, March - November, with the exception of holiday weekend & special college events.
