Career coaching role

Career coaches help high school students to explore interests, values and skills and identify matching potential career pathways. The career coaching process is intended to assist a student in discovering potential goals, building a plan for reaching these goals, and identifying any potential barriers to goal achievement. The coach facilitates informed and educated decision making which aligns the student’s plan with personal values, interests and potential. (p. 3, VCCS Career Coach Handbook, 2011)

Career consulting role

Career consulting occurs once the student and career coach have developed a career plan and mapped out a career pathway. The career coach uses contacts with business, industry and higher education partners to connect the student with resources and opportunities to further explore a career pathway, to gain insight and exposure to experiences which clarify and refine identified goals. A career coach is someone who has “connections” and knows how to access a variety of resources to help answer questions; identify sources of assistance; research topics of interest; and make introductions to business and higher education partners (p. 4, VCCS Career Coach Handbook, 2011).
