Effective, August 22, 2024, English, Math, and ESL placement tests must be started 3 hours and 15 minutes before closing. All tests require a current photo ID and a Germanna Community College ID number. The following are acceptable forms of ID:
- Driver’s license
- Germanna Community College Student ID
- Passport
- Personal ID from the DMV
- Military ID
- Green Card

English as a Second Language Placement
Prospective students whose native language is not English must take the English as a Second Language test. The English as a Second Language test will recommend that you take the VPT English if you score well on the test, and the counselor recommends that you take the VPT English test.
- ESL placement tests must be started 3 hours and 15 minutes prior to closing.
- A counselor or advisor must recommend the test, and your name must be on the list.
- Due to privacy laws, no test results are given by telephone.
- You must answer each question before you can go on to the next one. Once you have moved on to the next question, you cannot go back and change your answers. However, the computer will ask you to verify each answer before moving on to the next question.
- Retests are not allowed except according to college policy.
- Once you enroll in ESL classes, you cannot retest.
On rare occasions, power outages, server outages, or weather problems can and do close us without warning when we least expect it. We recommend that you plan to take your tests well in advance of when you need them. Please allow yourself enough time for testing and enough time for us to serve you.
